How Long Should a Central Valley Well Pump Last?

You have a significant investment sitting deep underground. In the Central Valley, where sand intrusion and mineral-heavy hard water are facts of life, your pump is working harder than a pump anywhere else in the state.

The Lifecycle of a Submersible Pump

On average, a well pump in the Central Valley should last between 10 to 15 years. However, we frequently see pumps fail at 5 to 7 years due to three specific factors:

  1. Sand Intrusion: Sand acts like sandpaper on your pump’s internal components.
  2. Hard Water: Mineral buildup can cause the pump’s impeller to seize.
  3. Short Cycling: If your pressure tank isn’t functioning, your pump might be starting dozens of times an hour, which burns out the motor windings rapidly.

How We Spot Failure Early

We don’t just wait for the pump to die. During our annual maintenance, we perform a formal AMP draw test. By comparing the power usage to the manufacturer’s specifications, we can often tell if a motor is struggling before it stops working entirely.
